Why I Lead

I wasn't raised in Scouting.
Scouting found me.

I grew up in a small rural farm town in northwest Ohio, the son of two blue-collar factory workers and hobby farmers. I was never a Scout. In fact, I don't remember there being a Scouting program in my hometown at all.

Years later, with a degree in organizational leadership and a job offer in hand, I entered the Scouting profession and went to work for a small council in Wood River, Illinois. It was there that everything came into focus.

“I discovered an organization that doesn't simply talk about leadership. It gives young people the opportunity to practice it.”

Leadership in Action

Leadership is a practice,
not a position.

Philosophy matters most when it shapes how people are treated, how decisions are made, and how an organization responds to opportunity and challenge.

People

01

Build ownership, not dependence.

I believe the strongest teams are built when people are trusted with meaningful responsibility, given clear expectations, and supported as they grow into leadership.

Relationships

02

Create trust before asking for commitment.

Whether working with staff, volunteers, donors, or community partners, I focus first on listening, understanding, and building relationships that can sustain long-term progress.

Progress

03

Challenge the organization to keep moving forward.

Strong organizations honor what works while remaining willing to improve systems, expectations, partnerships, and programs when doing so strengthens the mission.

A Vision for Scouting's Future

Innovation should strengthen tradition—not replace it.

Scouting's mission is timeless. Our responsibility is to preserve the values and experiences that have shaped generations while continually improving how we deliver them to today's families.

I believe the future of Scouting depends on strong leadership, membership growth, healthy units, philanthropic investment, innovative programming, transparent governance, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

Guiding Idea

Looking Forward

My hope for Scouting is simple.

That every young person has the opportunity to discover their potential, every volunteer knows their service matters, and every community sees Scouting as an essential partner in preparing the next generation.

I believe Scouting's ability to deliver on the promise of developing character, leadership, and life skills in today's young people is as relevant today as it has ever been. We must continue to invest and innovate to empower the Scouting mission to carry on for the next 100 years.
